Vastu Shastra principles play an important role, not only when it comes to buying a house but also when moving into a rental accommodation. We look at the important Vastu aspects that prospective tenants must consider, before finalising a deal
External Vastu factors to consider, for a rental home

While renting a house or apartment, the external environment also plays a crucial role, although one may be occupying the flat only for several months. The location of the property, house/flat and street, is important.

“External forces influence the internal forces in the house to a great extent. While visiting the place to be rented, have your spouse/family members accompany you and try to gauge how you feel in the space. Besides the energy, check the ventilation, light and flow of air in the house. In urban cities, most places have mobile or electricity towers. Avoid places that are too close to these towers. Also avoid places that are close to hospitals, graveyards, or too much traffic – in other words, restless environments. If the place makes you uncomfortable or uneasy, it may not suit your energy patterns,” says Vastu practitioner Prasanna Narayan of Narayana Vastu Consultants, Bengaluru.

Points to check before moving into a house

One must keep basic things in mind when renting a house. “Most importantly, avoid a house with too much Vastu negatives like a toilet in the north-east, or a kitchen in the north-east or south-west zone, or a missing corner in the north-east or south-west of the house. The master bedroom should be in the southwest zone,” advises Parmar.

While renting a house or an apartment, try to ascertain the history of the property – how prosperous the previous occupiers were and the reason for them to shift. “The direction of the main door is important, based on the individual’s date of birth. There are positive quadrants and the main door should adhere to this principle,” adds Narayan. Perform a small havan, before entering the house, to purify the space and cleanse it of any negative forces. A Ganesh puja, Navagraha Shanti (worship of the nine planets) and a Vastu puja should be performed.

Colours have vibrations. Hence, opt for lighter shades on the walls and avoid harsh colors and too much grey or black. Before shifting, have the house freshly painted and repair all leaking pipes, taps, broken furniture and shelves.

Correcting Vastu defects

“For correction of Vastu defects, one can use Vastu harmony paintings, yantra, and crystals, to bring tranquillity and success. Use symbols like elephants, Kuban crystals, Buddhas and paintings of water bodies, mountains or the sun, as these are considered auspicious,” adds Parmar. If you are already living in a rented house that has Vastu defects, consult a Vastu practitioner who can guide you with remedies that do not require alteration of the space.

There are a few other simple measures that one can adopt, to make the rental space harmonious. For example, regular mopping of the floors, with salt water, can cleanse the space. “Light incense, dhoop or essential oils to cleanse the home and to keep it smelling fresh. Playing harmonious music or chants, can also create a soothing ambiance. For positive and cheerful energy, nurture a few plants or place flowers and pleasant pictures in the house. Keep the environment free of clutter, dust and cobwebs, as it attracts negative energy. Also, ensure that the clocks in the house are in working condition,” concludes Narayan.
